How does identical triplets happen

Non identical triplets occur around once in every naturally conceived pregnancies. Just for some added confusion, the chances of having identical triplets are about one in every six overall triplet pregnancies. The majority of triplets are what is known as trizygotic. This is because they are formed when three separate, individual eggs are fertilised by three separate sperm.

These babies share the same characteristics as any other siblings with the same biological parents. They can be the same or opposite genders. Triplets can also occur when two of the babies are identical and have formed from monozygotic identical twins — see below. This means the other, third baby is a singleton, formed from a completely separate egg and sperm.

Two of the babies will be identical but the third will be their own, unique little individual. When one single egg is fertilised by one single sperm and this fertilised zygote quickly and evenly divides into three separate zygotes, identical triplets are formed. Another possibility is that the fertilised egg splits into two and then one of these eggs divides again.

These are what are known formally as monozygotic triplets. Similar Post. Multiple Births. Weight Gain With Twins You have just discovered that you are having a multiple pregnancy. Whether you are ecstatic, shocked, or overwhelmed, you may….

Gilbert explained preeclampsia is caused by the placenta. With triplets, there were three times the amount of placenta that could potentially cause complications. Gilbert said most triplets are delivered at 32 weeks into the pregnancy and the Hepner babies were delivered healthy at 33 weeks. Researchers have also found some other hints: Studies show that older, as well as larger and taller women are more likely to have twins.

The people of certain ethnic groups, including the Yoruba people of central Africa, are also more likely to have twins, whereas other groups, such as people in Asia and Central America, are less likely to have multiple births, a study in the journal PLOS ONE found. But these numbers are only for surviving multiples; sometimes, the fetuses of multiple pregnancies don't survive to birth.

Births involving twins, triplets and quadruplets often have complications, including prematurity and low birth weight, Herman said. In those with a condition called twin-twin transfusion, one fetus siphons blood from the other, and is born with ruddy skin, while the other is pale and scrawny, Herman said. Women who carry multiples also have a greater risk of gestational diabetes, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. But the public continues to be fascinated with twins, and stories about identical triplets, quadruplets and quintuplets tend to make the news.

Such births also make a lot of work for parents. To tell their kids apart, the Hewitts have given each of their three boys differently colored strings to wear on their wrists and ankles, according to the Sun.
