How does mute work in gmail

Any other filters you've set up that match the conversation are still applied. Muted conversations are permanently archived, but the messages within them are not marked as read.

To find conversation threads that you've muted, type "is:muted" into the search field. Muted conversations also appear in regular searches, so you could type "from: " to find a muted thread or search for the subject header.
